A Reminder of what was, Once FloridaPast
The first Hospitality House, or Welcome Station,  opened in Yulee Florida.
Their doors opened to Tourists, sometime during the fall of 1949.
Which was on the Georgia-Florida line.
Seven other Stations grew from there;
U.S. 41 at Jennings * U.S. 231 at Campbellton * U.S. 1-301 in Hilliard *  U.S. Route 27 in Havana *
U.S. 90 in Pensacola * Marine Center in Fernandina Beach * and U.S. 19 at Monticello
As we find other sources online that depict FloridaPast Welcome Stations,

We are close to where the Photographer was standing. Note the palm trees are now full grown.
As Google updates, we may get another opportunity to re-set this a bit better. Still Close though.

Welcome to Florida, the Land of Sunshine and Orange Juice

1930s L.C. Shadrick & Son - Dead Center of the States' Line
Clicking on the image above,
will take you to the exact place this was/is.
Last Bar from FloridaPast, First Bar for Georgia.
L.C. Shadrick was a Smart Man building his place in two States.
Right on the Line too.
Can you imagine, 1930s, nothing but wilderness as far as you could drive in a few hours? What a spot to put a Bar and Grill, while living there.
Ma would get up, do some home-made cooking, and the Travelers would come by and have a Great Meal.

Research reveals in a 1940 census, L.C. Shadrick was 50 years old, from the County of Hamilton, Florida, where he did business and resided with his family, here of course.
His wife's name was Jewie Shadrick, at this time, age 45, having two sons, Carl 24 yrs., and Alton, 7 yrs..
L.C. was born about 1890 in Georgia.
As history is found, we'll post it here.

You just gotta' love that, "LAST FLORIDA BAR" sign.
Imagine, 1930s, Nothing around but Wilderness and long quite lonely highway ahead. Are we going to stop?

More often than not, the linen view postcards, were created after an original photograph. It was a less expensive way of promoting your business. And in those days, most establishments gave these cards away to tourists.
Sometimes these views were created after a painting.
The Artist would make a rendering of a given place, and then printed on postcards.
And sometimes these views had both, which is obvious that this view did.

The photograph above left, the camera clicked sometime during the early 1940's era. before opening time. If you were to Reverse the View in the Now & Then Fade, you'll note that the glass block windows, still surround the entrance door.

As we view these stools at the counter of The State Line Bar & Grill here in Jennings Florida and Jennings Georgia,
we must wonder about all the converstations that went on.
This is the kind of fade we enjoy placing, WhatWasInThere. <- our long time venture of placing Now & Then Fades Inside. As time goes on, we'll have Plenty of these Fades to share. You may also want to visit our WhatWasInThere Facebook Page.

Stuckey's - that well remembered stop - Stuckey's Roadside

We'll get out, stretch our legs, Fill Up the Gas Tank, and Grab our Favorite... Stuckey's Pecan Log!

Don't forget the Pecan Log, gotta have it! 'How I miss back then'
And an Ice Cold Bottle of Coca Cola to go. For Everyone!

Just like I imagined..... when I closed my eyes for the FloridaPast Tour
When traveling to highways of FloridaPast, one must always think of Stuckey's
We topped our gas tank off, had our widshield washed, filled the trunk with oranges, and again, we're off to FloridaPast
Stuckey's of Perry, FloridaPast - We stopped for a fill up
Can Ya'll remember? I'm sure yah can.... it was a time of serene travel
Stuckey's Coca Cola and Texaco Three Icons of FloridaPast
If we wood'a Known then, what we didn't know today.....
Should'a grabbed all the FloridaPast souvenirs, and stashed em away for Florida Today

Because Stuckey's always reminds the past highway travelers of a more simpler time,
especially when visiting FloridaPast,
we decided to add more Stuckey's views
for your enjoyment

I personally can remember stopping at Stuckey's whilst traveling the highways of yesteryear.
I'm sure I stopped at this particular Stuckey's a few times throughout the FloridaPast times of traveling
As once said; You don't know you'll miss it, till it's gone

When building our FloridaPast Tours, it was thought we would keep the like with the like. Or in other words, keeping some kind of order. You'll soon find out, if you haven't already, there is no order. Especially with our Roadside and Highways of FloridaPast Tours. As I find an image or interesting content, I place it where, at that particular moment, my mind tells me to.
And as I build FloridaPast, I realize, it's Much Better Not having order. Making it a more Interesting Tour down the Highways. It's boring if you know what's up ahead, but by not knowing what to expect, it builds Excitement. This is why, when we travel the Real Life Highways, it's Always Best to leave the mainstream, and meander down the country roads and forgotten highways.
