A Bit of Borrowed History to share about Celo Soda ->
"Celo was a popular celery-flavored soft drink in Florida.
W. Truman Green came up with the original concoction in a Tampa drug store in 1915. The Celo Company prospered in the 1920s with the support of local investors and stockholders. Like most of the small SodaPop Bottling Plants, the Celo Company also struggled through the Great Depression. And again, like the majority, they never made it as big as Coca-Cola or Pepsi. Vernor’s Ginger Ale owned Celo in the 1940s, but the drink hasn’t been seen for many years. (Source: Sarasota Herald-Tribune, September 11 and 18, 1996)."

As more history is found or shared with us, I'll post it here.

Through the years of dealing with FloridaPast Dairy History, many Folks would ask, "how do you determine rarity?"
The short of the answer, would be, how large of a farm, how many cows, and how large of an area did the particular farm supply.
Back in the day, the majority of farms, anywhere U.S.A., had fewer than 500 cows, and some much less. And most supplied a "one horse town"
The Reality is, that ALL FloridaPast milk bottles are considered Rare and Scarce. Especially 1950s back.
Right at the end of World War Two, WWII, Mr. Moore had compiled a list of Orange County Dairies, providing the head count of cows and size of barns used for each dairy that was in operation at that time.
Included in this survey;

Rare Datson Dairies, Orlando, FloridaPast Salesman Sample Milk Bottle Cap
Cloverleaf Grade A Milk
Originating from The Crown, Cork and Seal Company, which was in Baltimore, Maryland. Crown, Cork and Seal, was one of the largest bottle cap producers in the industry. So far as known, we have the only known examples of these Salesman Sample Caps. It's not the standard size milk bottle cap.
And the crimped edge, isn't deep enough to crimp around a bottle neck. This would have been presented to Mr. Datson for his approval, before producing the standard milk bottle caps. If we learn more, we'll certainly post that history here.
Made of a light weight aluminum, with the standard type seal lining underside.

Datson Dairy - The First Commercial Dairy in Orlando
It was located at 148 West South Street in Orlando
"The Datson Dairy was founded by Berton Clarence Datson in *1916 and was the first commercial dairy in Orlando. [*another source states Datson Dairy opened in 1910] -The original dairy was located on Hourglass Lake at the corner of Cloverlawn Avenue and Curry Ford Rd. Its processing plant was on West South Street in Orlando. The pastures were located between Conway Road and Lake Conway. The dairy began with 9 cows and grew to over 900- by 1937. In 1926, the dairy's founder died in an automobile accident, and the dairy operations were taken over by his four sones and son-in-law: Clarence, Theodore, Glenn, and Ricahrd and Robert B. Dawson. The dairy was sold to the Famed Borden's Dairy in 1951." <- as embossed on the Historical Marker.

From Mr. Fietz's Goat Farm
MEASURES; 7" high CONDITION; 8 ++ minor signs of use/age FP #400 PRICE; $275.00 S/H/I; $15.00 |
After extensive research, we realized just how Rare this bottle is.
We found a Wonderful blog that gives us a little insight of history surrounding Dew Bloom Goat Dairy Farm in Brandon. I contacted the Author of this Wonderful Blog, and got permission to share one of his childhood memories growing up near Dew Bloom Dairy. ___ "But in 1957 the goats were still down the road, and in the little, shaded ravines where they wandered was a kid’s paradise for playing cowboys and Indians or Yanks and Rebs. (There weren’t a whole lot of goats, and Mr. Fietz was a friendly old fellow. One event that stands in my mind is his inviting all the neighborhood kids—through our parents—to come one day and watch a nanny give birth.) I also learned the hard way that it was great soil for contracting hookworm, and more than once Mom had to cart me to Dr. Greenwell for a treatment of ethyl chloride to freeze the little vermin into oblivion. No more running barefoot, as we’d loved doing in Tampa." ____ If you are interested in First Hand History of Brandon and Tampa, it's a Must to visit "From the Eastern Front out of Brandon" And of course, history/text credit goes to Fr Mike who we Sincerely Thank |

The image below of T.G. Lee Dairy, from 1950s era, is now a Now & Then Fade. Which you can visit by clicking on, and then slide the fade bar from yesterday until today. If you look close, it appears this Original building still exists, with additions and changes. Never the less, the entrance doors and building lines do line up. Since there are trees in today's view, I placed at the only possible place so we can get the gist. The cow adds to the fade. Thomas Gilbert Lee was born in Orlando, 1894. In 1925, his father gave him 20 acres of land in the outskirts then, of Orlando, supplied him with one family cow and co-signed a bank note, so that Thomas was able to purchase another cow and calf. The T.G. Lee Dairy started that year, and hasn't stopped growing yet. |
A bit about T.G. Lee Dairy History....With only one calf and a cow, on 20 acres of land, Thomas Gilbert Lee and his wife Elizabeth, started the the T.G. Lee Dairy here in Orlando, in 1925.
We borrowed a few words of history from today's company. -> "Thomas and his wife Elizabeth started T.G. Lee Dairy with 20 acres of land. During the first few months all of his milk was sold at the wholesale level. Later he expanded to door-to-door customers. In the 1930’s, there was nothing easy about loading and delivering milk. It was all done by hand... and back!" - "In 1952 T.G. Lee introduces the paper carton. And to commemorate T.G. Lee’s 30th anniversary, plastic milk trucks were given out to local children." - "In the early 1960’s, the original cow pasture is turned into one of the first air condition malls in the Southeast. T.G. Lee holds an open house for the community to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Visitors looked and saw old bottling machines." Please Credit All History Text to, and visit T.G. Lee Dairy to learn more. _"All the Cows Are Gone, but T.G. Lee Remains"_ "In 1955, Lee sold 20 acres at Colonial Drive and Bumby Avenue to a New York real estate investing group for $200,000 in preparation for building the $3.5 million Colonial Plaza shopping center. It would be the largest retail project in the city's history up to that time, and it later became Orlando's first mall.He built his modern processing plant on the remaining 36 acres just south of Colonial Plaza." Please keep in mind, the color hue of this cap, differs a bit from actual. I tried my best to get some good photos, but it's a Shiny Reflective surface. Making it tough to get an accurate photograph. The red color, leans a bit toward the maroon tone. A Beautiful Sample Cap. Again, this would have been presented to the owner of the dairy, for their approval of producing caps for their bottles. Also made of lightweight aluminum.

Nice Rare 1960s Canada Dry PopBottle Crate
Manufactured by Brice Crate Co., Bronson FloridaPast
A Real Collector, would be interested in the history of what he or she collects. Otherwise they are just collecting to decorate and show off.
Which is fine. History has always been a factor when we collected. Especially since "History Determines Values" of what we collect. Researching the history of this particular crate, revealed some interesting things. |
MEASURES APX; 16" x 10 1/2" x 4"
CONDITION; 8 FP #290 PRICE; $SOLD! Thank you! S/H; $30.00 ________________According to the Ocala Star Banner, dated October 29, 1967, "Since 1956, the production of
crates by Buren and H.W. Brice, who were brothers, had risen dramatically, since
they purchased Peters Crate Co. in Polk City, FloridaPast. In 1960, they moved
the mill to Bronson, to be near the raw materials used in production of the
crates, mainly the Cypress Tree Forests that they had owned. It's said that
about 130 Workers were employed at this time." Please credit this history, and learn more here on The Ocala Star Banner Newspaper Site
___ Mr. Buren, and Anzonetta Brice, manufactured crates for the FloridaPast citrus industry, Coca Cola, R.C. Cola, Canada Dry and other Companies that used wooden crates. In its heyday, the company employed about 200 people and had a day and night shift. |
Because of it's history, where it was, and by who it was made by, and the fact of how Clean this crate is, it makes it one of the Rarest and Best Canada Dry Bottle Crates that we'll find. Made of Cypress wood.
Bright Paint, and Clean as it gets. With the exception of an oil stain, that can be seen in the images, it shows only minor signs of use, some factory cracks, that aren't bad. |
Currently, BK Cypress, who manufactures log homes, is at the Bronson, FloridaPast location. I borrowed some history from their website, along with the two black and white photographs shown above.
"The family of Buren Brice, co-founder of what is today BK Cypress, began with what are known as portable saw mills traveling from swamp to swamp harvesting cypress trees.
There was a transition from harvesting to manufacturing. In the 1950s several types of crates were produced at our current Bronson, Florida location to include beverage crates and citrus crates.
There was a shift in the crate industry as plastics became the dominant material for manufacturing over cypress wood. Jim Keeton and Buren Brice realized the shift and also recognized that cypress could be used in log home manufacturing."
