If you have ANY History to share about this, we Invite you to visit us on Facebook, at this thread; https://www.facebook.com/299818756719028/photos/pcb.982939988406898/982937695073794/?&theater |
We were Extremely Lucky to have found this Rare Piece of Citrus County History. Especially being used, with names and scores. Which Adds More Historic Value.
This is one of those items we come across, where condition becomes secondary. When History Out-Weighs All. I Particularly Enjoy Rule No. 2, "Play may be made from any Dry Phosphate Pit or Player may follow usual Water Hazzard Rule when ball is driven into Dry Phosphate Pit." A Hole in One for the Golf Score Card Collector as well. Note the Stymie Measure. "A stymie refers to an archaic rule in the game of golf." |
So far, the only history we were able to find, was compiled by The City of Inverness, Florida, Citrus County. Which is Very Interesting, so we had to borrow some paragraphs to share with you. -> ROSEMARY -> "From Boom to Bust" - "The year is 1927 and the hardrock phosphate boom that Citrus County saw in the late 1800's is fading fast. The discovery in 1889 of phosphate -- used in munitions -- leads to a network of railways and canals weaving through the countryside to transport the commodity. With the start of World War I in 1914, shipment of phosphate overseas was stopped and the demand dwindled. Though there were more than 30 phosphate mines in the county by the 1930's, the doors to many had already closed."
"One such operation is the Southern Phosphate Development Company (SPDC), owned by Howard B. Tuttle. In a July 1997 issue of At Home -- the Citrus County Historical Society newsletter -- the Rev. James C. Hoge said Tuttle closed his mines in 1924 and later turned some of the land into a 9-hole golf course and park space. Hoge wrote that the homes and possessions of dozens of black employees, who predominantly worked the mines, were moved to a section of land between present day U.S. 41 and County Road 581, along the Atlantic Coast Line Railway Company tracks."
Again, Please credit all history/text to http://www.inverness-fl.gov/272/Rosemary <- A Wonderful site to visit, with a lot more Interesting Citrus County History. Well Worth The Visit.

Early 1900s - DADE CITY FLORIDA
COLEMAN FERGUSON CO.S DEPARTMENT STORE ADV. WRAP SHEET
With the "cat" song
I find this piece very interesting. From a long defunct, Main St., Dade City, Florida Department Store. An advertising wrap, with the "cat" song.
Note the two digit telephone numbers. Back in the day when you would pick up the phone, and ask for "Sara".
A small bit of history about Coleman Ferguson Store, borrowed to share;
"Dec. 1, 1884" - "Henry W. Coleman and William N. Ferguson open a store, the second general store in Dade City."
"Aug. 1, 1887" - "The County Commission votes to accept the proposal of Coleman Ferguson and Co. for a two-story structure on Meridian St. in Dade City for use as a temporary court house free of rent. The company promised it would be finished by Sept. 5."
"Aug. 10, 1896" - "A fire in Dade City destroys Coleman & Ferguson’s general store, T. J. Howard’s drug store, J. J. Wilson’s poolroom, Powell’s barber shop, and A. A. Boone’s grocery store. The loss was estimated at $27,000."
"Aug. 18, 1901" - "The Tampa Tribune reports, “Fire, early yesterday morning, did $1,000 damage to the building at Eight avenue and Fifteenth street, owned by Coleman & Ferguson, of Dade City, and occupied by A. Noriega, grocer.”

A quote from the letter; "Carl, notice this stationary upon which I am writing. Notice the date. I used these when I was part of the Festival, which had the third largest parade in the country at that time. A collector's item.
I was one of the original officers that started this and today it is a yearly event during the Fourth of July weekend. Runs for ten days. Quite an affair." History comes to us in many forms. This letter happens to be a Great Example of how we learn real history. So now we know, that Lou Johnson, Florida State Chairman C.S.A., was the original Founder of Barnum Festival in West Palm Beach. Also note, the stationary itself, is actually dated 1957. |

Florida Sportsman Steamer Tourism Snip-It Advertisement
for Kissimmee Valley, FloridaPast
Old advertisements, or Snip-Its, as I like call them, are one of the Best pieces of the Puzzles of History.
So much can be learned from these Snip-Its. Many were only published one time, for one publication. Never to be seen again between the pages. This ad taught me about The Steamer Sportsman, which navigated from the Kissimmee Valley of FloridaPast, all the way down to the Everglades. So we learned, Kissimmee was referred to as Kissimmee Valley, and Sportsman Steamer. If I find any history about this Steamer, I'll add it here. MEASURES; 4 1/4"- x 2 1/2"
CONDITION; 8+ FP #279 PRICE; $12.95 S/H; $FREE (in a standard letter envelope) |

Col. H. T. Baya and Capt. W. B. Watson returned from New York
yesterday, where they went for the purpose of perfecting
arrangements for the consolidation of the de Bary Merchant’s Line

last evening that all the necessary arrangements had been made
and that the lines would be consolidated on the first of April when
he would assume the entire management.
A stock company composed of Col. Baya and the present owners of
the de Bary Line had been formed under the laws of New York, the
former by-laws, etc., of the de Bary Line being adopted. Capt.
Watson says that for the present no change of any consequence
will be made either in the offices or employees of the line and all
the old employees of both lines will be retained as nearly as
possible in the positions at present filled by them."
